BLOG 6 - Postgraduate Studies
Hello class!
This week we are writing about our future...I truly believe this is an engaging topic, where you can present your personal academic dreams and hopes. You can include programmes here in Chile or overseas.
-Reasons
to do the course.
-Subject(s) you would like to study.
-Where
you would like to study (Chile or abroad).
-How you would like to
study (distance learning, blended system, part-time course,
etc).
-Any other relevant ideas.
For the present task, you need to write 150 to 155 words. Pay attention to misspellings, grammar errors and vocabulary. Do not forget to post three (3) comments on your classmate’s posts and one (1) on mine as well (25 words as a minimum!) Try to use the structures we have learned in previous lessons and all the English you know. DO NOT USE GOOGLE TRANSLATOR TO DO YOUR ENTRY. Give it a crack and good luck on your task! :)

As a language teacher, I wanted to do something related language. Specifically, how do we learn a second language, after we have learnt our first one. In Chile, most people are going under this process as they are learning English as a second language.
I set forth several objectives before I went there, tons of questions I reserve for my lectures. I also wondered regarding the readings that would be required and which ones would be related to my Chilean background.
So, I studied TESOL (Teaching English as a Second language to Other Languages) in England. I attended one of the best universities on the field in the country and in the world. I learnt how a language is acquired or learnt. Similarly, all the processes involved in the learning, how the brain is activated, the cross-cultural background and more.
We began our lessons in a room full of students from 30 different nationalities! Most of them used English as a second language, some as a first. But most astonishing to me, was the fact that many used it as a third or even a fourth language! I learnt from them, about their experiences to become a language user and a teacher. I had to read the latest theories and discussions on education, language teaching, English language history, and English language evolution on both research articles and academic books.
Thus, among other subjects, I studied Sociolinguistics, where I learnt how a language is pictured within a society. English Grammar, where I learnt that a language hides more than simple grammar rules, but complex ways to arrange ideas. World Englishes, where I leant that English has been shaped according to geographical uses. I really enjoyed doing my postgrad!
Learn a second languaje is very important in the world that we live today. It opens up many opportunities for you and also helps at work for example or just in normal life if you live in a country where spoken the languaje that you was learn.
ReplyDeleteI agree with my classmate, personally I think that studying English is essential for a country that only speaks Spanish and where education is poor. Teacher, feel lucky to have had the opportunity to study what you like :), even more so if you had the opportunity to travel! How beautiful that must have been! :O
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful, he has a lot of studies on language. Also, studying the language in another country is better, because you are in contact with people who speak that language and you have to interact a lot more, so you can learn even more :)
ReplyDeleteEverything you learned in the postgraduate is impressive. I think she was honored to study abroad at one of the best universities in the world and to learn from his experienced colleagues about his language and cultures.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you have enjoyed and learned something as complex as the various aspects of the language. I hope one day to do a postgraduate degree in another country and have an excellent experience.
I agree with my companiers: learn English is very important not just the job, also for the life (It open you many opportunities). Also, to my mind, traveling to other countries should be a fantastic experience.
ReplyDeletePS: Professor, I like your decision and determination to want to teach this language in a country where the people not spoken much the English.
I think we all agree that learning English is very important, and I am glad that you were able to do it abroad, as you also got to know the culture of England
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that the qualities that are most prevalent in those who study languages are perseverance and strength. Your experiences and stories must be amazing, as well as being able to meet people from different cultures.

ReplyDeleteGoing to study abroad is a great experience, I think it expands your mind and helps you see things from another point of view. Definitely if you have the possibility to do it, do it.
I find your academic resume to be very comprehensive and totally enviable ha, ha. Could you tell us a little more about the experience of studying with people of different nationalities and so much culture.
ReplyDeletei think learn a second lenguage is very important, specially learn English. Because its the "universal" lenguage and it serve to comunicate with people from other countries. Maybe sometime you can tell us the experience to study in other country and the pros and cons, its a very interesting topic to talk about.
ReplyDeleteI think that learning new languages is so important, because you can get to communicate with people from other countries and very different cultures, and that can be a whole new level of learning outside your comfort zone.
ReplyDeleteIndependent the career, learn another language will open many doors both personal and professional way. Now a day the English is accepted like a universal language and is very useful to travel around the world and know other cultures.
ReplyDeleteAll my life I was interested in the German language. I remember when I used to say love phrases to an old girlfriend in that language and it felt enriching. Obviously, it also serves to develop as a professional and open new work doors. ♥
ReplyDeleteTo clarify a bit further, I didn't go to England to learn English, I already spoken the language. Thus, I went to specialise on 'How the language can be taught' to speakers of another language. Also, I would like to remark that many of my classmate we bilingual plus English, by instance, I had a classmate from Nigeria. He spoke Yoruba, Nigerian Pidgin English and English. Another person was Eli. She was from Djibouti, therefore she spoke Arabic, French and English. Ans so forth...My professors had several nationalities as well: South Korea, Cameroon, Australia and many more.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I noticed, all students wanted to share, be open and mindful to the rest of the class...I discover thought this that most of our fears and limitations are projected on TV not in the real life. Even people with very different religious background were extremely mindful and easygoing .
It´s very important to the children to learn more than 1 language, the globalism makes a conection world that if you didn´t understand english you can´t do a lot of things, so i really gratefull for your job.
ReplyDeleteNo doubts learn english open a great world of possibilitys. That open us doors in the laboral field, give us the chance of travel or live in other countries, show us a new ways to understand the world by contenity that is just in english and, in general, unite peopple of different matenral language to comunicate in a universal language.
ReplyDeleteFor that reason, in every areas, the english teachers are doing an escential labor to the society.
